So you are saying that you have one lead from battery cable post on starter to test bulb and one lead from starter solenoid pin to test bulb?????
That is not a correct way to hook up a test bulb and you will most likely have the battery post feed steady power to bulb at all times and the solenoid stealing ground backwards so that the bulb will stay lit at all times.
The test bulb should have one lead from starter solenoid pin to bulb and then the other lead should be connected to ground.
Forget about the thick battery cable post at starter for right now.
