Tip in.... Posted by Mike Lynch [Email] (#81) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Mike Lynch) on Thu, 4 May 2006 18:32:37 In Reply to: '00 aero...where's the punch?, Megatori, Thu, 4 May 2006 18:09:41 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
For me a turbo 9-5 Aero has a very non-linear throttle. That is a slight or moderate throttle push at low RPMs makes a tremendous amount of torque. The last half of the throttle doesn't do a whole lot, it's the tip in that produces the rush.
That's why I say a 9-5 Aero "feels" stronger than a BMW 540i for example. The 540 has more horsepower, is quicker and faster, but you really have to get your foot in deep and get the revs up. A tip in of the throttle of a BMW V8 reveals V8 torque, but you have to exceed 4,500 RPMs to get to the power.
The 9-5 Aero is a monster from 1,500-3,000 RPMS and does it without much throttle pedal. I spend a lot more time in the 1,500-3,500 zone than I do above 4,500 revs, hence the 9-5 feels quite a bit snappier in daily driving.
A low RPM torque rush is a much more subtle thing than high RPM high horsepower. It takes longer to appreciate high torque at useful speeds, it's not as in your face as frenetic horsepower.
It's all in what you are used to driving and Saab turbo torque is a subtle thing, but you wind up using it all the time. I'd be curious to know what you had been driving previous to your Saab?
