I recently bought a 2001 Saab 9-5 wagon SE for just that reason. Safety. My wife and 14 day old daughter ride in it, as well as my 2.5 year old son, and it has now taken over the kid hauler duties from my trusted 95 GMC Jimmy (I was following the idea that I'd rather be in an accident in a bigger car, especially if it involved another bigger car, like a Yukon).
To be honest the two cars I was considering were the two swedish safety pioneers, a Saab wagon or a Volvo x70 wagon (XC version). Everything else either didn't give me that 'safe feeling' or the peice of mind.
Hearing stories like yours simply confirms, once again, that I made the right decision.
Although, it should be noted that no matter how safe a car is, unless you use the seatbelts and/or other safety restraint devices (car seats for kids etc), you're simply playing russian roulette with your and your loved ones lives.
