Fro what its worth, a battery can get an intermittent open circuit in it. I had this happen on a truck once. The battery would die, then heal itself and work for a while. I would carry jumper cables and a volt meter.
Question... When you went to crank, did the lights dim? If they did not, the battery is probably OK and something is preventing the starter from getting power. I like the neutral switch. It could also be the key switch. Any recent soda spils?
