The climate control is never really out of AUTO. The temperature setting is always in AUTO when it is set to a number. It will start to temper the air to maintain the set temperature. However, if it is set to LO, it is full cold, and HI is full heat.
If you change the fan speed, only that becomes under manual control - the temperature and vent position will remain in AUTO.
If you change the vent position, only that becomes under manual control - the temperature and fan speed will remain in AUTO.
I think the ACC in the 9-5 is one of the smartest and best performing AUTO system I have ever used. If you find a temperature that you are comfortable with (for me it's 68) and just let it do its own thing, it should perform very well. I have had mine set at 68 for a couple of years, and I never have to touch it. (only OFF when I want the windows open).
