ACC Noise

I am not really sure how to explain this but I will give it a shot. When I got my 2001 9-5 V6 with 160k miles a few months ago (the cold months), I would have the ACC set to 70 for both driver and passenger. Everything seemed to work fine. Then as it started to warm up and after my car sat in the parking lot in the sun I would start to use the A/C to cool it off for a little while. I noticed after turning the temp. down to about 66 or 68 that a noise came from under the hood when driving at about 1700rpm and also after letting my foot off the gas to coast. The best way I can describe it is as a grumble/growl. As soon as I turned off the ACC or put it on ECON the noise stopped. I figured I had a failing A/C compressor and would deal with it when it stopped working seeing as I was getting lots of cold air. Last week it was really hot and humid around here for a few days so I used the A/C and the noise actually got better after a while. Anyway, today I was freezing cold do I turned the ACC up to 80 to get some heat and it made the noise I was getting with the A/C on. I don't think the compressor would be running while I had full heat on. Is there something else that could cause this annoying noise or I am going crazy?
