My thoughts on the 2006 9-5:
Exterior:
I like the painted out door handles and body trim, I like the front end a lot, except that there seems to be too noticeable of a gap between the hood and the bumper that bothers me. I like the rear end except I don’t like the shapely cuts they made in the lower part of the rear bumper.
Interior:
This is where I have a strong dislike for the 2006. There is a lot of obvious cost cutting inside. The dash material looks very cheap in my opinion in that it looks VERY plasticy. The radio and climate control units are much larger than they need to be in that there is much too much black plastic surrounding the controls. They should have cut back on their face plate size to allow for more of the metallic silver finish or wood. The nav unit is especially bothersome to me with how much extra black plastic surrounds it. The last thing that I have a problem with in the interior is that they failed to bring the dash fascia treatment to the shifter surround, and instead put a big piece of black plastic there instead of a wood or silver finish. The 3 things I really like about the interior of the 2006 were the seats (especially with their 2-tone and light stitching), the steering wheel, and the new instrument cluster looks very 9-3.
I have not had the chance to drive a 2006, but as I understand it, it is the best driving 9-5 yet.
