I have 2 9000s, a '96 CSE 5 spd (mine) and a '95 CS auto (daughter's). We just replaced my wife's Exploder with a '03 9-5 wagon.
I can't talk about reliability yet, but the 9-5 is still very much a Saab. It has a different feel than the 9K but I like it a lot and if my 9K died and I couldn't find a good one to replace it I'd get a 9-5. You can tell it will be a good long road car like the 9000 and will perform as well overall.
The 9-5 seems more refined, with lower NVH, but that's because it's a much newer design. The 9000 was designed in the '80s and that shows, but I still like it the best of all Saabs. But having both in the driveway is nice and they are both fine cars.
Just check the car you get thoroughly. Earlier 9-5s seem to have had more "issues" than the more recent ones.
