Do you know if they "rolled" a new chain in only or took the engine apart to replace chain and guides. The price would give it away if it is less than $500.00 or more than $1000.00.
If they only rolled it in, the engine might have had sludge issues that was not addressed and sludge particles might have fallen down into the oil pan, clogging the oil pick up screen even further than it was before the job.
If they took the engine apart, replacing chain guides and oil pump seals, it might be something that went awry in their work, like a damaged seal or so.
Just make sure you check and write down everything that was said and done before the first work and then what they say is going to happen next.
