Have you had your car in for the DI Cassette recall? Seeing as it's an Arc, it has the V6, so usually only one DIC will go at a time. The burning smell you smelled was most likely the plastic and rubber of the DIC melting. When the DI goes, it pretty much turns off that bank of cylinders, so your car is running on 3 cylinders, hence the roughness. Don't run it anymore, although you probably can't get it to stay running, because when my DI cassette went on my V6 it blew the catalytic converter. This is because the gas that's supposed to be ignited in the bank of cylinders that's out is all going through the exhaust. Luckily they replaced my catalytic converter under the recall because we were able to prove it was due to the DIC. I don't think this would have anything to do with being 600 miles past an oil change.
I hope this helped, and if it is the DI cassette, it will be free!! (my favorite four letter word).
