01 9-5 Aero Problem, Help

My 01 9-5 Aero w/ 42000 miles, has been cutting out. The turbo and RPM gauges drops and the car feels like it's gonna die for just a second, then it catches and starts running again. It happens over and over, so it goes from cutting out to surging. It will do this intermitently. Any gear, driving, paralel parking (very interesting), at stoplight, whatever. Some days it runs fine, other days I feel like I might not make it home. Even when it's not totally cutting out, sometimes it doesn't run as "strong". Not as much power.
Our independant mechanic hasn't been able to duplicate the problem ( I don't think he's trying very hard) or find the cause. The diagnostic computers say it runs great! It went to the dealership to have the ignition recall thing done, so we hoped that might fix it but apparentlty it already had the new version on it. They thought it might need a software update. I just don't want to spend all kinds of cash at the dealership with no idea what the problem is.
Any thoughts? Any info/advise would be greatly appreciated!!! I'm about ready to sell the thing, but I love the car!
