fuel pump removal

I have access to the fuel pump and sending unit under the rear seat. The unit comes 1/2 way out, but at the bottom is a plastic nozzle (inlet port maybe?). There does not seem to be enough room to tilt and remove.
Is there a specific manuver required for removal?
