Why should it be?

What makes us think cars SHOULD be reliable? I had to repair a toilet this month, but no one ever says "Are toilets reliable?" My house AC needed a repair last month, and I had to throw away the three-year-old toaster that would no longer toast. I have to tune or repair my bicycles on a regular basis, and my Olympus digital camera, overhauled about a year ago, just started dropping pixels all over the screen. Does anyone ever go to HomeDepot and say "Is this Kohler reliable?" I don't think so.
Cars are very complex machines with many sub-systems and parts. Sometimes they break. Expect it. And it's been my experience--from cars to bicycles to espresso makers--that the finer quality the machine, the more likely some sub-system will develop a problem. You want reliability, think mediocrity.
And my German-ancestry wife? She is totally unreliable; has to go to the doctor three or four times a year. I'm thinking about replacing her with a Japanese model.
