This might help.
I have a 2004 9.5 Arc that I bought new on April 1, 2004. Within a few months of purchase, cruise control developed issues and worked only intermittently. Dealer said it could not replicate. Every visit under warranty, dealer said it could not replicate problem. Soon, cruise control stopped working completely. Within the last month, the electric locks on the trunk stopped working. Button in car would not activate the lock nor would the remote. Today I discovered that the reverse lights or backup lights (back up lights – back-up lights) and the tail lights and brake lights on the trunk lid do not work.
After being told by Saab USA and the dealer that it would not cover under warranty, I started researching the issue on Saabnet and came upon this post by TonyB. You should definitely check it out. http://www.saabnet.com/tsn/bb/9-5/index.html?bID=125557
Tony explains and I can verify that the moulded plastic device that Saab/GM designers installed to protect the wires where they pass into the trunk lid actually seems to destroy the insulation and eventually (4 wires in 28 months in my case) sever the wires that pass through it. At the time I was looking for info on what might be causing the issue with the trunk but seeing Tony's post about the his problem with the cruise control, a light went off in my head.
The same harness on my car definitely contains wires (which were severed by the very device that Saab/GM installed to protect them from being cut) for:
1.cruise control
2.back up lights (reverse lights)
3.electric trunk lock
It also has 3 or 4 others with damaged insulators which I believe are for
1.tail light
2.brake light
3.rear fog light
This problem with this harness being cut is a design flaw. I believe it presents safety, electrical and potential fire issues. What happens when these various cut wires with voltage in them start rubbing together? What fuses do the blow, what other systems could they involve, what other systems could they damage, could they cause a fire? Could they cause accidents because brake lights, tail lights, cruise control systems activate or deactivate in an untimely fashion?
If you attempt to fix this yourself by resplicing the wires, after resplicing the wires and taping them up so they do not cross, be sure to check that the fuses are all ok also. Some of them may have been blown by the various wires touching each other. Also, Jeremy made this post
http://www.saabnet.com/tsn/bb/9-5/index.html?bID=125840
where he describes how to remove the plastic mount in the trunk lid. He says:
I just fixed mine this weekend. I was able to pop the plastic end off the trunk lid by grabbing the top of the piece with my right hand and rotating clockwise. it didn't require much, but it did make a popping sound and thought i had broken it. I've popped it off a few times during this process and it appears to be find. My wires where broken right where the rubber slips on to that plastic piece. I ran new wire from the harness clip up to the lib and stashed the excess wire in the trunk lid.
My trunk release works now, as does my inside trunk light. A fuse replacement fixed the reverse lights, but i don't have my park assist working, not sure what the cause of this is.
Hope this helps
I can confirm that the technique to remove the plastic mount in the trunk lid works on my 2004 9.5. If you want to see pictures of this, just reply to this post with your email address.
