The small hose allows the throttle body to suck engine gasses from the valve cover area for re-combustion. The white plastic thing is a check-valve that prevents air from moving the other direction.
A bad hose would allow the throttle body to see excess fresh air. Don't know if this would cause what you were experiencing. My small PCV hose rotted in half a few years ago and had to be replaced. I was experiencing engine smells in the passenger compartment but no stalling out.
I hope your stall out problem is history.
