I can tell you because mine started dumping out coolant in a stream, it had started out as a trickle - and I smelled coolant months ago and had to add some I asked the dealer to check it at my 15k service "We did a pressure check and fond no problems" Right on dudes.
So back to answering your question it sits below that black wiring harness box approx in the middle of the firewall. Look for a black valve with 3 water hoses clamped to it - you can reach in and inspect it with the engine running and more than likely you will see water dripping or in my case streaming out of it.
I'd wager that the same cl*wn that designed the original PCV system likely was asigned to design the heater by pass valve. So here is a $ 40k car with 28K miles on it with a cheap failure prone valve that if one did not react properly when it begins to dump coolant, well you could easily waste your engine.
So my by pass valve leaks coolant, and I vent some steam.
As it is my car again has to be flat bedded to the dealer for repair, 6 months back it was for a dead battery. Bring on the reliability discussion - oh it's a European car so I should expect it to happen.
My 1986 Sabb 9000 went 225k miles without ever once. breaking down and having to be towed
