Re: Coolant Leak Posted by bobc [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Coolant Leak, Andrew ![]() |
I had a coolant leak that is apparently very rare. I doubt that this is your situation but I suppose its a possibility so I'll mention it for completeness
I thought my leak was the bypass valve: the valve was dripping wet. I replaced it, checked for leaks at idle. looked good. Went for a test drive and the coolant leak persisted.
with the engine ruinning at idle there was no leak at all, but as soon as I drove I would loose coolant fairly quickly.
turns out it was the heater hose that exits the block and goes to the coolant bypass valve. that hose carries coolant under pressure only over 2000 rpm or so. At idle the hose did not leak, but when revved up, I could see a steady stream.
by my typical good fortune the stream just happened to angle directly towards the heater bypass valve, soaking the valve and area, making it look like the valve itself was leaking!
anyway this particular hose is very hard to find, and would take a week or more to arive so I fixed it with stock heater hose ($1) and a few plumbing fittings ($3). 4k miles later still no leaks.
