Thanks very much for the in-depth reply. So if I read your message correctly, it sounds as though the repair my mechanic proposed may not be necessary, and tightening down the head bolts should be a good, inexpensive first step. In addition, it also sounds as though the dribble down the side over the oil pump may give the appearance that the oil pump is leaking as well - but in fact, it may simply be leaking from the timing cover. I would be delighted if this was the extent of the repair instead of the proposed $1800 repair.
What is puzzling is that I received this diagnosis from an Indy mechanic, and then called another Indy mechanic for a second opinion - they also weren't surprised by the diagnosis and stated that the leaking around the timing cover was common. However, they didn't mention anything about simply tightening down the head bolts. I definitely think that I'll take it to another shop for a second opinion since the repair isn't imminent, but I do want to get it checked soon.
Thouhgts? Thanks...
