Noise at 40-45mph

I have just bought a 95 Vector (UK model 2.0t with 5 speed automatic transmission) to replace a fantasic Saab 900 automatic which I sold with 120K miles and no problems whatsoever.
I am very pleased with the 95, a far more comfortable and refined car than the 900, however I have one (hopefully) small problem.
At between 40-45 miles an hour a strange whine noise can be heard above the radio. The noise sounds very much like a differential type noise. If I slip the car into neutral the noise disappears, if I move the gearbox manually into a lower gear the noise persists but at a different frequency. The noise is all but inaudible above 45mph, however, if you wind the windows down and listen really hard it can still be heard albeit at a much much more hushed level.
Any ideas, I don't know much about cars but I can't see that this fault is related to the wheel bearings (take the car out of drive noise can't be heard) - Saab/GM auto gearboxes are apparently very tough, so hopefuly not a gearbox problem, leads me to think that maybe the CV joints are worn.
By the eay the car has covered 58K miles, and I have purchased an extended warranty on the car which should cover any repairs.
Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks
