temperature gauge issue

The temperature gauge on my 01 lpt has "shut down" a few times while I'm driving. It will be in the normal range one minute, and then it catches my eye as it plummets and the needle drops to the bottom. If I stop and start up the car again, it is back in normal range.
Has anybody else experienced this? My initial guess is that it is the thermostat...is that correct?
