The TK 3.6 which you (almost certainly) received in 2003 is much more durable than the one originally installed in your car. It has been calculated to have a failure rate of 50 per thousand cars after 10 years (IIRC) when used with the latest spark drive logic.
But alas, its ultimate durability has only been (publicly) validated when installed in cars with the latest spark drive logic. I don't think your 1999 model can be updated to the new program - check with a dealer or someone like Swedecar who knows for sure. The old DI design has been shown to halve its failure rate when used with the new program (the 2003 V-6 models had the new program and the TK 3.4 DI.)
Dealer price for a DI was under $200 during the height of the recall program.
