I run 'em at 41 front, 40 rear. This is within the range provided in the manual. They don't seem noisy, ride quality is good.
I cross them over for a couple of reasons - first, because you can (the tires are not unidirectional) and many other cars' owner's manuals specify this pattern. If it's good enough for my old Saturn it's good enough for my Saab ;) Second, there are pretty frequent reports here about the 9-5 wearing the tires unevenly, particularly the rears. This pattern has each tire at each corner after 20k.
As for rotating every 5k being overkill, to each his own. I've never heard a report of the OEM Pirelli Rossos lasting any longer than the 26k I got out of 'em. 15-20k is a more common figure. 5k rotations guarantee even wear. Other tires on other cars getting more life is irrelevant to this discussion. I get 70k or so out of the tires on my Civic with rotations every 10-15k, but that's got nothing to do with our Saabs.
