Contrary to popular belief, firm downshifts are desirable in performance cars and trucks. The faster, more abrupt shifts result in less wear on clutch plates and provides longer service life. One thing I immediately noticed after installing a Stage II ECU upgrade was more abrupt, shifts.
In today's transmissions, shift points and durations are set in the ECU. In the old days car enthusiasts would buy shift kits to accomplish the same thing.
One caveat I'd add though is that I'd expect the car to freewheel in auto-shift mode rather than engage the gear and cause engine braking as you'd get in Auto-Manual mode.
