This can be a tough issue. Many shops won't even allow

customers to bring in their own parts--it's money out of their pocket. Your guy seems to penalize you for it, but hey, it's his business and he can run it as he chooses. It does sound like he doesn't have a good parts source for Saabs--and may not like working on them-- so that may be a hidden issue, and one you really need to be aware of.
I would talk to him about it in a very non-confrontational manner. See if you might be able to come to some agreement. After all he doesn't have to guarantee the part, which he does if he supplies it, and that guarantee is usually part of the rate structure. (If the part fails you have to pay for the work again, where most indys will do the job over and not charge or charge the re-do at a lower rate.) Given that he's made good money off you he might be willing to bend.
My indy, who I've been going to for 11 years, lets me (and I assume others) bring in their own parts. But if the car is already in there and he finds something else that needs doing I buy the part through him. I've asked my guy on several occasions if it's really OK and he always says it's fine. But he also knows I buy OEM or equivalent parts--often the same as he would put on--so he knows they will fit and work OK. I do know that if I came in with some OTW part he'd recommend that I not use it. And I'd probably do what he said. His rates are fine ($70/hr) and he is totally trustworthy, so I take both 9Ks to him and the 9-5 will go too once it's off warranty.
I also bring over a case of beer every so often. DK if it helps, but they do take care of me.
