Developing a reliable product is more difficult than building a working prototype. I have worked where I have observed electronic environmental testing (shock and vibe, thermal etc. I have seen many electronics at the prototype stage that appear to work well, but when I ask the engineer to let me drop the item on the floor I usualy hear "Not yet, it's still a prototype". It is very expensive to get a low volume item up to spec for realworld operation. It is possible to do it, but one needs the economy of scale to make money at the same time. The non-recurring engineering costs can be a killer. I am always in awe of the packaging engineering that goes in to common products. I have dropped my Palm Treo-700 several times onto concrete and it still works, amazing! The Palms of 10 years ago could not handle a drop on to a wood floor.
I wish AudioTroll well, and wou be happy to pay close to $200 for one.
