Did I damage it?

I have a '01 95 aero. Over a year ago, it told me to add coolant fluid. OK, a little low, so I added some. No problem for nearly a year. A few weaks ago, it said that again. I added some, then a week later - same thing. OK, so I then knew I had a real leak. I never saw any coolant on the ground. Today, there was a little blue coolant on the top of the transmission. I topped it off and made the decision to drive to work. I got the low coolant message on the way to work. Before I drove home, I add ed some water, but I guess not enough. It started to heat up, and I got the red exclamation mark. I pulled off and shut down within a minute. Temp guage newer really went into the red. I added a little bit of water, and started the engine - temp normal. I then slowly added more water (over about 15 minutes) unit it was full. Engine was running (normally), and the temp was normal during this time. I continued the drive home with the temp normal the whole way. As I got near home, I noticed that it was idling more slowly and rough than normal. Obviously I will not drive the car until the leak is fixed, but is the idle problem an indication of serious damage, or is there hope that it will be OK once I get a proper mixture of coolant and water in there?
