Engine running hot

Today I noticed that my engine was running hotter than normal. Usually the gauge hovers around the "D" mark, around 9 o'Clock. But today, my temp gauge was hovering around the 'R" mark, around 10-11 o'Clock. It hovers in this range on the highway as well as local stop and go traffic.
I checked the coolant levels and they look good. The fan was running high after the engine was turned off. Seems to be running longer than usual.
Any ideas on what's going on here?
