The diagnostic test described is sound. It will help confirm the cause of the leak.
After 100K plus you shouldn't be surprised if it is the water pump; your symptom description is consistent with that. My 200 9-5 Aero went 80K before the water pump went...and yes, the symptoms were the same...a puddle under the front of the car towards the right side inside of the front wheel.
This should be taken care of soon; it can get worse rather quickly.
