I think you're 100% on this one - the only problem stories all relate to the belt not being replaced. For my wife who wants an automatic anyway the V6 is much better as she never gets caught with turbo lag off the line due to the A/C heat soaking the intake... it just jumps and goes smooth.
Saab actually discontinued the V6 in 2005 - there were plenty made, so I think the issue was more of redesign for the new model (was to be out in 2005, now is due 2008) to replace since you can't boost much with an asymmetrical design without hurting the engine. The new 9-3 has the V6 in 2.8 liter form, but that's also a new engine with VVT, and I expect to see a new 3.x V6 with VVT near 300HP to keep Saab competitive with other brands due to the current HP wars...
OK back to subject, just get documentation on the timing of any V6 cars and check it out yourself to see how the belt is (remove a valve cover if possible) - check the oil also. If it's all OK expect the best IMHO!
