After getting the Service Theft Alarm message, and before I ordered replacement batteries for the alarm, I took Anders' advice and had the codes read by the Dealership to verify the true source of the alarm message.
It cost me $45 to get the codes read, approximately three times what the D-I-Y repair cost, BUT I then knew what the problem was. There is a multitude of sensors in the anti-theft system, and although replacing siren batteries on a 5 or 6 year old car is probably prudent proactive maintenance, replacing the batteries will not guarantee elimination of the alarm message.
Some readers will feel that I wasted $45 by having the codes read first, but even at the $60 total cost it was one of my least expensive D-I-Y repair jobs, plus I don't have to wonder if I really fixed the problem.
Accurately diagnose first, repair second. Don't we all demand that our Doctors follow this protocol?
