How do I identify sludge if I flush with Amsoil?

I bought a 2001 Aero recently from an independant dealer. I was able to contact the previous owner who bought the car new and said he changed the oil every 3,000 miles at an Indy because it was a turbocharged car even thought Saabs change interval was more, and went to Saab at the Saab oil change intervals. I don't have any service records to verify this. I have recently noticed oil near the timing cover and was having to add oil. I did the PCV update #6 a month ago and now don't have to add oil anymore. I want to flush the motor with some Amsoil. When i drain the oil will sludge be noticeable in the oil when I drain it? What does it look like? Or do I have to drop the pan? I see on Chucks website he recommends an oil analysis. Is the anaysis the only way to see sludge when the oil is drained. I stuck a coat hanger up the oil drain hole but nothing came out. I'm not too confident that that experiment provides good results.
