Phil, the only way to tell if you have an engine that requires any type of extraordinary effort, in particular a flush additive, is to take a look at it. Though some say removing valve cover is one way, it only let's you see the top end. IMHO, if you plan on keeping the car, and are not certain of the maintenance history, you should drop the pan. Regardless of what you find, thoroughly cleaning the pan and pickup screen will start your ownership on the right path. If you find heavy amounts of carbon deposits in your pan, and the pickup is clogged badly, your engine walls may also be covered, and the timing chain valley will have considerable debris as well. Now you need to follow Chuck Andrew's flow chart. Until you do that, or have it done, changing oil frequently, or adding a flush additive is not the way to go . If the pickup screen is clogged, flush additive will cause more clogging. Chuck Andrews is the expert , no doubt, so definitely read all of his material, and you will get more info than you -hopefully- need. Do a lot of reading from this board as well, since there is a lot of info. Good luck and regards, Tom S.
