Your indy was correct, it's theoretically possible for a quick acting flush to loosen enough gunk to cause problems. Note, if a filter clogs it goes into "bypass" mode, which isn't great since there's no filtering anymore, but not a disaster because the oil still flows.
Worse in a 9-5 would be the pick up screen getting clogged, which would cause a flow problem.
Anyway, those concerns are one of the reasons some people prefer Auto-RX, as it has a slower working action and if used properly should not cause any problem.
I absolutely disagree with your mechanic's recommendation on the oil. Castrol GTX 5W-30 doesn't meet the specs or requirements for this car. I believe when your car was new Saab spec'd a 5W-30 semi-synthetic. I have a 2003 Aero and that's what was in the manual then. In 2004 Saab switched to recommending a full synthetic, and started using Mobil 1 0W-40. If you want to be extra careful you should make sure the oil meets the European A3 spec, which will tend to lead to you 0W-40 or 5W-40 synthetics. One of those at a 5k interval should serve you well.
