Reattaching seat covers

I noticed a while ago that that the leather seat coverings on my 2002 Aero SW seats are not securred to the seat frames - the edging strip that is attached to the leather is not clipped onto the sheet metal frame that runs around the perimeter underneath the seat.
THe seats don't rock or anything, but the passenger seat leather does squeak against the centre console (annoyingly so).
Questions - do I have to remove the plastic panels to reattach? Any good techniques to doing this without loosing a lot of blood (or breaking knuckles)?
Thanks - JMJ
