Seller is a Saab dealer. Just got back from a test drive. Car hasn't been through the "detailing" which is better in my opinion. Interior kind of worn but ok,
*** interiors are rugged, shouldn't look worn other than left bolster on driver's seat might be a little 'faded'/scraped. Mine is like new after 75k miles.
tires need to be replaced,
*** $500 ish +
exterior good. Brakes work ok, but there is a fairly prominent ridge/lip on the rotors so they may need to be done soon.
*** rotors will need to be replaced when pads are done, how much wear left on pads? DIY for brakes all around about $400 ish.
I have done brakes on my 1991 900, so hopefully these are not much more difficult.
*** did mine, not hard.
All doors, windows and sunroof work. Comes with two keys. Dealer claims all services, including 130k were done there, but they wouldn't show me the records (due to privacy concerns).
*** that's BS. If they are worried about privacy they can always print the record and black out the owner's name.
What bothers me is dealer said they had never heard of sludge problems on 1999 model year only the newer ones (sounds like bs).
*** a dealer will NEVER admit to hearing about ANY problem with ANYTHING. The 99 is as susceptible to sludge as any.
Looked under hood, but couldn't tell much. Oil looked clean on dipstick.
*** clean on dipstick is no indication of sludge.
There was a fair amount of crud on the ps reservoir
*** lid tends to seep a little and collect dust. If there's crud there, means no one has ever even wiped it off during the life of the car.
and the radiator expansion tank looked like there was a dent in it.
*** they do have a funny dented shape to them, can't tell you whether your dent is normal or not. Is it full to the proper level of nice clean blue or yellow coolant?
Car has 2.3t motor. Check engine light was on, dealer said they would take care of it, whatever that means.
*** it means they will turn the light off and hope you buy the car before it comes back on. Could be something minor, could be something serious & expensive.
I have no problem offering a lot less. Worst thing they can do is tell me to get lost. Car has no warranty so it is kind of a crapshoot.
*** there's lots of cheap, no warranty '99 9-5s around. Don't get hung up on this one. Get an independent opinion. If you're concerned about sludge get the valve cover pulled (approx 1hr labour max, not timing case cover as mentioned, timing case cover is MAJOR engine work) and take a look inside. Get the engine codes read and see if they point to anything serious. Insist on seeing complete maintenance record.
