I own both. I have a 1999 5 series, which I wouldn't trade for any other car. If somebody gave me a free brand new Mercedez E550, I would rather take the car, sell it and get another E39 BMW.
When our other car got old, I wanted to get another E39, in wagon style, but my wife picked a 2003 95 linear wagon. Now we both regret about the decision.
I hate to say this. SAABs are nice cars, but they just can not reach the BMW standard. E39 handles way better than the SAAB, the fit and finish of SAAB leaves much to be desired. My E39 is 8 years old, it is still smooth like silk and bring smiles to my face every day. I am in Canada, I drive it in the snow every year, the muffler on this car is still shining. This beast seems to last forever. I feel these sudden contrasts every time I seat into the SAAB.
The only major flaw about BMW is the cramped rear seats. If you have toddlers in the child seat, they would likely kick your seatback all the times.
As for maintainance/repair, I too do all the works by myself. BMWs are among of the easiest cars to work on. Parts are abundant and relatively cheap.
Again, SAABs are nice cars. But IMO, it is not fair to compare them to BMWs.
