1999-2009 [Subscribe to Daily Digest] |
This past weekend, I took my 1999 9-5 wagon (4 cyl turbo, ~126,000 miles) to Death Valley, CA for a camping trip. At one point, our caravan stopped at a small turnoff, and as I came to a stop next to our friends, the oil light came on and then flickered, while the car was idling. I immediately shut the car down, and we got out to check the oil. The consensus in our group was that we could smell burning oil at the time. The oil level looked good, and we tried starting the car again and noticed that with just a little RPM (>=1000), the oil light would go off and stay off. We decided to take it back to the camp site down the road. This drive was completed without seeing the light again. After letting the engine cool, we checked the oil again, and found that it was still good. I should also note that much of this weekend trip was with the car highly loaded (5 adults + lots of camping gear) and going up grades, and down them in low gear. Although I am clearly not a car expert, I did not hear any sounds from the engine that I would call unusual.
Because we were in the middle of nowhere, we made the decision to try nursing the car home the next day, with our eyes on the oil light, ready to shut it down if the light came on. To make a long story short, we made the drive home (roughly 300 miles) without the light coming on again (not even while at idle, and through numerous stops and restarts), and without any noticeable difference in the car's performance. We did have a friend trailing us for part of the way, and they reported seeing a 10 second burst where thin white smoke came out of my exhaust.
This car has been handed down to me, and to my knowledge, has not been run with synthetic oil for most of its lifetime. I am realizing now that I may have made a mistake in my recent oil change (~2 weeks ago) by putting synthetic oil (Mobil 1, 5W-30) into this fairly high mileage car which has not previously been running synthetic.
Has anybody else had similar symptoms on their 9-5? Any suggestions on what this problem might be, or what to check to narrow down the possibilities, I would greatly appreciate hearing them.
Sorry for the long message, and thanks in advance!
