you have two things to check:
1 - Actual oil pressure using an external gauge
2 - Check for a leaking head gasket.
Low oil pressure could be caused by sludge. if you are handy you can remove the valve cover as a prelim check. But the real clincher is going to be the oil pickup screen. you cant see that unless you drop the pan or use a borescope.
white smoke indicates a leaking head gasket.
if your head bolts have not been replaced you should do that. your car had loose headbolts from the factory, and leaks can sometimes be stopped by replacing and properly torquing the headbolts.
As far as switching to synth oil, I cant see any reason not to. high mileage or not.
