Reliability is fine, but a Saab is not a Honda

so you can't ignore it mechanically.
As others note, Saabs (and all other European cars) absolutely need to be maintained at least in accordance with the owner's manual. And doing more doesn't hurt, either. This site is a great place for finding out what is likely to be an issue, how to deal with any trouble and tell when the dealer is blowing smoke up your pants.

But what you get out of the extra maintenance is a car that doesn't fall apart around you as it ages. One that will still feel as great at 150,000 miles as it did at 75,000. And still be working fine at 200K and more. And you get comfort, practicality and all-weather performance. And very important, you get a car that can take a hit, and use all its strength to protect you. I put my daughter in a Saab when I could have had a low maintenance Toyota because if something happens I want Swedish steel around her, not used Kirin beer cans.

Yes, a well-maintained Honda (or Yota) can run a long time, and probably cost a bit less over doing so, but they aren't satisfying to DRIVE. Wonderful appliances, but that's it. The first long trip you take in a Saab will have you wondering how you ever put up with Japanese seats, ride and handling for so long.

We've had Saabs, going back to 1984 and still have 3 of them. The oldest is almost 12 and still runs fine with almost 150K on it.
