Randy,
As you can see, you sort of hit a nerve here. You have received a lot of good information and you will find this board one of your better friends if you have issues with you 95. Given the responses, let me try to give you a layman's summary. I bought my first-ever SAAB early in MY-2004 and have watched this board like a hawk ever since, okay, I've missed a few things, but at the time I was appalled at the level and severity of issues being discussed, although most were directly related to the unusually high rate of failure of the DIC (ignition cassette that replaces distributer, coil, and plug wires) The outrage here appears to contributed to a recall of many pre 2004 models but since then the production models have the fix included and I have never seen a single report of a DIC failure on a 2004 or newer SAAB. Likewise, but less serious, was the SID (information display) I suspect that every single one of those failed within or shortly after the factory warranty and I know some folks that just lived with it. But, in 2004 they went to a new display and again, I have not seen a single report of a failure since. Engine sludge was another issue that was running rampant when I got me first SAAB and there were a couple recall fixes relating to PVC values in pre-2004 models and great admonishment here to change oil every 5K with full syn (Mobil1-0w40 or absolute equivalent only) which I have done. I can't be so certain about the disappearance if that problem and there has been a lot of confusion with SAAB going to 15K recommended oil changes at about the same time. But, again, a quick search of this board might show me wrong but the sludge problem seems to have greatly diminished the last couple years as well. Other than that, yes all sorts of strange things can happen to all cars, I've had an inordinate amount of problems with interior pieces falling off or apart but hardly reliability issues. My original battery did experience sudden death at 1.5 years and left me stranded in my garage, which was my only call to SAAB free "roadside" service, which was fantastic. All in all, I'd say that if you (we) keep up on routine maintenance things will go pretty well, oh yes, expect your brake rotors to wear out about as fast as your pads so wait to replace both when the pads are at minimums, and take the advice on the replacing the pulleys with the drive belt and I bet you good to go, but I'm no mechanic, like some folks here.
