It is certainly a DIY project. I just replaced the thermostat on my '02 Aero a few weeks ago. As far as thermostats go, it's more of a pain than most cars I've worked on (tight squeeze), but even so, it only took about an hour. The thermostat is on the back of the engine, driver's side. I got mine at NAPA; don't forget to buy the gasket as well. In short, here were my steps:
- Jack the front of the car up
- Remove the black plastic cover underneath
- Drain as much coolant out of the radiator as will come out. This will lower the level below the thermostat. The little plastic knob is a pain to reach, and didn't want to open for me. I ultimately slid a crescent wrench over the tabs and opened it that way.
- Lower the car
- Remove the hose from the thermostat
- Remove the 4 bolts around the thermostat (2 hold it on, 2 are for a bracket that's in the way)
- Pull out the thermostat housing and throw away the old thermostat
- Put in new thermostat (if it has a bleed hole, it should be up)
- Reverse the steps to reinstall
- Add coolant back. Do the hose squeezing thing, bouncing the car, etc. to get as much in as you took out. If you get close, start it, warm it up, turn it off, let it cool, and you should have room.
