hi folks,
i just purchased my first saab, an '02 aero manual with 66k miles. i spent a couple of months looking for just the right one, and lurked here a bit while waiting. most everything on the car is in excellent condition, but i have a question about the transmission:
i have some intermittent trouble getting in to first gear. the problem is more apparent when the gearbox is cold, sometimes bumping in second and then trying first again allows me to select it properly. sometimes a firmer handis required (i've spent the better part of the past decade driving alfas, so my default driving style really baby's the gearbox). once the box warms up, it is pretty easy to get the gear to engage smoothly. when i test drove the car, and for a few drives when i first got the car i also had some difficulty engaging reverse. but i haven't felt any difficulty there in a while.
can someone shed some light on this? is this a synchro problem, or possibly a worn transmission mount/misadjusted shift linkage/master or slave cylinder? if it is a synchro, will switching to the MTF0063 fluid improve things, or am i going to have to replace the synchro to solve the issue?
also, could someone reccommend a good indy mechanic in the princeton, NJ area?
thanks,
-ethan schartman
