I had this same problem fixed under extended warranty. They changed the 1st and second gears and synchros. It worked beautifully for 30K miles but now it's back to square one. It happens only at cold too. Too late for me to get it fixed again- No warranty anymore. And I don't want them to mess it up even more...
Try this when it doesn't go in 1st: Get the lever in third gear then first- Works all the time.
For the 2nd: get it in 4th and then 2 nd. (Yes with the clutch depressed and don't engage it in 3rd and 4th). It take a fraction of a second and work great when we have freezing cold weather. It reminds me of my old Renault...
