Cupping can be a general term for any uneven wear or can be a very specific type of wear pattern. In my experience, cupping is being used to describe inner edge wear on the tire. The negative camber causes the inner edge to wear and with bounces on the the road creates a vibration that leads to minor cupping (the primary ear pattern matches the picture attached). If you increase the tire pressure, the cupping is reduced but the inside wear is still going to occur. If you load the car near its limits, the wear pattern makes the car unusable (unless you are going to rotate every 1K or so) and the suspension components will fail making the whole problem progressively worse.

There is also true cupping that looks like cupped wear spots on the tire.

Cupping
Cups or scalloped dips appearing around the edge of the tread on one side or the other, almost always indicate worn (sometimes bent) suspension parts. Adjustment of wheel alignment alone will seldom cure the problem. Any worn component that connects the wheel to the car (ball joint, wheel bearing, shock absorber, springs, bushings, etc.) can cause this condition. Worn components should be replaced with new ones. The worn tire should be balanced and possibly moved to a different location on the car. Occasionally, wheels that are out of balance will wear like this, but wheel imbalance usually shows up as bald spots between the outside edges and center of the tread.
