Sorry, I had just gotten the bad news when I posted, to clarify...
$4,200 is to replace the turbo and the oil cooler. There is effervessing brown pancake batter-like substance in the coolant expansion chamber so that one was somewhat obvious.
The turbocharger is "about to fail" according to the dealer. Some quick background. I drove to an Indy yesterday to get a stalling and warm-start problem fixed, he thought it was camshaft position sensor and fixed it for cheap. Right before I went to the Indy I checked the coolant and saw the mess inside. He didn't feel comfortable touching the V-6 so he sent me to the dealer for the coolant issue (who I stopped going to when they tried to charge $100 for a fault code reading). I drop it off yesterday night, and they look at it this morning. They tell me oil cooler failed, $2200 (seems to make sense based on contents of expansion tank). And turbocharger "is failing", Which THEY INSTALLED 2.5 years ago (38,000 miles ago) after original turbocharger failed at 60,000 miles. They can get me a refurbished turbo for the "low price" of $1,900. Mechanic showed me oil sludge inside turbocharger, and dealership said that car smoked out parking lot upon startup (something I never witnessed).
I assume that with 3 turbochargers in 100,000 miles plus a cat converter (which I got dealer to fix for free last year when I suggested the failed recalled DIC could have caused it) something is messed up. A different Saab mechanic said turbocharger should last life of car unless there is sludge in the cylinder head.
