Here are some of the suggestions I have gotten:
DIY:
- separate the pieces using a torx bit, refinish
- Don't use any old torx bit, buy the special SnapOn torx bit. if you dont use the snap on bit you will die. separate the pieces, refinish the rim yourself
- under no circumstances separate the rim, you will die or worse
- remove the clear coat, keep the rim polished.
Send it out:
- They keep wheel intact, using a lathe, they remove the clear coat as close to the hub as possible, then they re-spray with clear.
- They separate the wheel, remove all paint and coatings, and refinish each piece
- they are "wheel guys" and they refinish it on the car, as westernny mentioned.
at this point I don't know what I will do. The most viable DIY solution is to remove the clear coat and polish the aluminum. Don (on this board) recommended a shop that will do this:
Cork Adams, who owns Precision Wire Wheels
Quincy IL. (217) 228-8315.
but I have not contacted them yet ...
otherwise there are plenty of wheel re-finishers out there, check Ebay, or google, or the yellow pages.
