To my mind, cupping is caused by bad toe setting. it is made worse by out of spec camber (places more force on the outer tread blocks), and it is made worse on snow tires or any blocky tread pattern (the blocks "skip" across the road surface)
We all know by now that our cars are known to have rear camber issues. so it is critical that the toe, especially in the rear, be within spec.
I think that if you get the alignment checked you will find that the rear toe is either out of spec or just barely in spec.
one caveat: cupping can also be caused by a tire defect (I think the term is "belt squirm").
