I noticed in Winter 05/06 that my emblems were chipping away. It made my 1999 Saab Sportswagon seem older than it is, although I like it better than the newer Saabs. I bought new emblems (decal and metal backing) off of eBay. Make certain you get the right size emblem for your car and make certain that it has the right prongs for the front or back of your car. Although they say to be careful with the little rubber grommets that are around the holes under the emblem, apparently the previous owner had done away with them. Emblem adhesive (Walmart) holds the emblems on just fine. Anyway, before replacing the emblems, I put a non-yellowing, glossy clear coating, bought from Home Depot or Walmart (can't remember) and heavily, but carefully coated both emblems. I let them dry for about 2 weeks. At around $80 for the 2 of them and the trouble, I didn't want to have to replace them every year. I carefully pried off the old emblems (flat head screw driver and cloth to protect car), removed remaining adhesive (pain in the butt), and attached new emblems. Make sure they are straight and not upside down. ;^). So far this has lasted for over a year and they look brand new. No yellowing, cracking, peeling, or flaking. Even if I got the emblems brand new from the dealer, I would have coated them. You can buy clear emblem covers off the net, but I don't know how well they work. I know that mine is sealed. I'll perhaps post again in another year to provide an update.
