You may want to start by removing and opening the Alarm Siren module. I remember you had the batteries soldered onto the board by our local Batteries Plus store, maybe a solder joint failed. Your visual inspection will be free, and maybe their service repair will be too.
I had Glassman Saab (somewhat close to work) do a Tech-II diagnostics on my system before I replaced the batteries. This was a $45 charge, which maybe wasn't the most economical first step with my 6+ year old siren, but I then knew that nothing else was wrong.
Anders recommended doing the Tech-II first because there are so many devices in the alarm system that can fail, and all give the same SID message. With an old siren it seems to make sense to D-I-Y the batteries first, since we all know batteries fail with time, then pay for diagnostics to look for other reasons if the problem persists. An owner with a new siren may want to do diagnostics first since the batteries should still be good.
With fresh batteries, if a quick visual of the siren circuit board doesn't show anything obviously wrong, you may need the Tech-II diagnostics.
p.s. - I had Guy Senesac perform his SID repair for my 9-5 and it was well worth the $95 cost. It is so nice to have a display I can read!
