Hope someone can offer some insight. I picked up a 2000 9-5 about 3 months ago, 2.3L lpt. During the state inspection, the Saab specializing tech (indie) said my turbo is on the way out because it's smoking and oil is leaking out of it and there's smoke coming out the exhaust for a few minutes when cold. He also said the oil pressure sensor was leaking and needed to be changed. After researching on this site, it sounds about right, so I'll be changing the turbo out soon. The indie qouted around $1200 parts and labor for an overhauled turbo. I can get an overhauled turbo from Eeuroparts for about $650, or a "used" turbo, supposedly with under 10k miles, from a guy on ebay for about $250. I have a back up vehicle, so is there anyplace that would overhaul the turbo I take out for reasonable? Also, is this a hard job for the DIY guy? I've done a lot of car maintenance, but never a turbo change. It looks fairly straight forward, but you never know about that one bolt or fitting that you need a $3000 tool to get at.
Also, I changed the oil pressure sender out a week or so ago, then on the way home 2 days ago I got the oil light on for a few seconds. I pulled over and the oil level was OK, so I continued home. I would intermittantly get the light to flicker, but no engine temp or noise issues so I continued on for 20 minutes or so until I made it home. I hooked up a mechanical gauge (Sunpro from China)at the sender port to test the actual pressure (I'm pretty much an expert at removing and replacing the starter now). When cold, the pressure was sky high at 60 psi, but as it warmed up it gradually came down. After about 45 minutes of running, I had about 10 psi at idle (800 rmp) and 28 psi at 2000 rpm. Does this sound low? By the way, since the Turbo is using a lot of oil, I've been topping it off with Castrol 5w-30.
Sorry so long, thanks for any help.
